Cannes 2011: Tree Of Life wins the Palme d’Or
Terrence Malick’s sweeping epic The Tree Of Life has won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Malick’s fifth film received a mixed response upon its premiere at the festival, with audience members awarding it both a smattering of applause and boos as the credits rolled.
This marks the second occasion that Malick has won the coveted award at the ceremony (it’s basically Cannes’ Best Picture trophy), having also scooped the Palme d’Or back in 1978 with his stunning sophomore feature Days Of Heaven.
Other big winners at Cannes this year were also revealed yesterday after two weeks of film premieres. Despite all the controversy surrounding Lars von Trier’s Nazi comments, his star Kirsten Dunst won Best Actress for his film Melancholia.
