The Help tops the US box office
After hogging top spot for the last two weeks, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes was toppled by Disney’s The Help this weekend.
Bringing in just shy of $20.5 million, The Help was down just 21% on last weekend, suggesting it should have the legs to stick around the upper echelons of the box office chart for a while to come.
The take leaves the film’s overall gross at $71.8 million and it looks a good bet to break the $100 million mark in the coming weeks. ROTPOTA has already reached that milestone, with a $16.3 million weekend taking its overall tally to $133.8 million.
So, how did Conan The Barbarian, Spy Kids 4 and Fright Night fare?
30 Best ’60s Movies
27. Planet Of The Apes (1968)
Why It’s The Best: Classic sci-fi that’s more highly evolved than any of the sequels, TV shows or ‘reimaginings’ that were spun off of it (at least until worthy prequel/reboot Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes came along).
Planet… comes loaded with political subtext and social commentary, but it also works on its own terms as an exemplary genre piece, aided by superb monkey make-up and that twist.
Defining Moment: “You maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!”
Apes remain top of the US box office
Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes continues to perform strongly for Fox, having enjoyed a second weekend on top of the US box office.
Whilst many had been surprised by the strength of its opening weekend, the monkey-led spectacular lost less than half of its original takings in round two, with $27.5 million pushing its domestic total over the $100 million mark.
However, the apes weren’t to have it all their own way, with literary adaptation The Help pulling in $25.5 million to take second place…

Andy Serkis talks Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
Andy Serkis has spoken exclusively to Total Film about his role in Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes.
This isn’t the first time motion-capture king Serkis has played a sensitive simian, but Rise… offers him the opportunity to do something totally different to King Kong.
When we asked the actor what attracted him to the movie, he told us: “The temper and the emotion and the domesticity of it is what excited me.”
“It’s a very personal story with global implications. I get to play Caesar from an infant through to a revolutionary leader, so that in itself is an incredible challenge.”
