20 Weird Movie Haircuts
11. Carlito’s Way (1993)The Haircut: Another set of unruly curls, these ones whispering over a thinning scalp.Weirdest Detail: What’s with the sideburns? At the very least they should be as curly as the rest of the ‘do, but here they’re just a tacked-on afterthought.Does It Work? Lawyer’s aren’t exactly known for their style (unless they’re on Ally McBeal), so the hair is pretty unimportant here to be honest.

Cannes 2011: The Tree Of Life first reaction
Terrence Malick’s long-awaited The Tree Of Life has finally screened in Cannes – to a mixed reaction. We’d say the cheers/catcalls ratio at the film’s end was roughly 70/30.Both sides will agree that it’s the US auteur’s most abstract meditation to date on life, the universe and everything. While the bulk of the film is set in the ‘50s, it also flashes all the way back to the birth of life as we know it. Yes, the rumours are true: there are dinosaurs. If the CG dinos aren’t the most impressive ever seen, there will be few films this year to beat Tree Of Life’s overall visual splendor.

Cannes 2011: The Tree Of Life first reaction

Terrence Malick’s long-awaited The Tree Of Life has finally screened in Cannes – to a mixed reaction.

We’d say the cheers/catcalls ratio at the film’s end was roughly 70/30.

Both sides will agree that it’s the US auteur’s most abstract meditation to date on life, the universe and everything.

Cannes 2011 Daily Blog: Day 0
The sun is blazing, the Croisette is buzzing and the Total Film flat is having hassles with its WiFi. Welcome to Cannes 2011!
For the next 12 days we’ll be here, queuing and viewing, Tweeting and not sleeping.
The big question is: can the world’s premier film fest regain form after a disappointing 2010?
All signs point to ‘yes’: heavyweight directors (Terence Malick, Lars Von Trier, the Dardenne Bros, Pedro Almodovar), no travel-disrupting ash clouds and head honcho Thierry Fremaux’s assurance that this year will be ‘very exciting’.
The screenings start with the debut of Woody Allen’s latest, Midnight In Paris. If the film’s as good as the cast is eclectic – Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Michael Sheen, Carla Bruni – we’ll be laughing.
We’ve also got a preview of Puss In Boots lined up. It’s not all about the auteurs!
Film We’re Most Excited About: The Tree Of Life (though we won’t believe we’re seeing it till we’re actually in the cinema. And even then.)
Number Of French Cats Who’ve Given Us The Evils: 2
Favourite Typo So Far: “Robert De Niro has had a prolific career in motion pictures, staring in such films…”
He does stare, doesn’t he? See you tomorrow…

20 Amazing Cannes 2011 Films

10) The Tree Of Life (2011)

In A Nutshell: Terrence Malick’s closely guarded ’50s-set art-drama stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain. A young Texan boy’s parents take very different approaches in preparing him for the vagaries of life in the big bad world.

Take Note: Specific plot details are rarer than unicorn turds, but rumours abound of wild surrealist flourishes - including dinosaurs.
