Martin Scorsese talks 3D
Having just released his first 3D film in the form of family fantasy Hugo, Martin Scorsese has been waxing lyrical about using the technology, and even suggests that Taxi Driver might have been better had it been filmed in the same way…
12 Exclusive Taxi Driver On-Set Pics
Steve Schapiro’s ‘Taxi Driver’ is a sumptuous photo-essay that noses behind the scenes of Martin Scorsese’s 1976 vigilante classic. At £650, it ain’t cheap - but Total Film has scored a selection of exclusive pics - with comments from Schapiro himself…
1. Keep It Light
Steve Schapiro: “This image was shot after the most violent scene in the film - the last sequence with all the shooting and stabbing and wrestling.
“When Scorsese shouted ‘Cut!’, everyone just collapsed about laughing - it relieved a lot of the tension.
“During filming, you could sense that this was going to be one of the greatest films of all time. The intensity of the acting really boosted the feeling that Taxi Driver was destined to be a classic.”
Cannes 2011: Scorsese and Von Trier team up
Maverick arthouse director Lars Von Trier will team up with American auteur Martin Scorsese on a new project, dubbed The Five Obstructions.
The film is based on Von Trier’s original 2003 experiment, in which he set out to remake one of his favourite shorts five times, each with a different “obstruction”.
One was challenge was that no shot should last longer than 12 frames, while another segment was shot in “the most miserable place in the world”.
Von Trier, whose latest film Melancholia is up for this year’s Palme d’Or, is no stranger to rules and restrictions, having co-founded the avant-garde Dogme 95 filmmaking movement.
But it’ll be interesting to see how veteran filmmaker Scorsese rises to the challenge, which is expected to see him revisiting Taxi Driver in some form.
18 Bad Movie Dates
5) Taxi Driver (1976)
The Bad Date: Disturbed cab driver Travis pursues Betsy ruthlessly before she finally agrees to go out with him. Then he blows it entirely by taking her to see Language Of Love – a Swedish sex education film.
Worst Moment: As they sit in the darkened theatre with all that moaning and groaning going on, you’re pretty sure it can’t get any worse than this.
